Can I Win at Slots in the Long Run?

Friday, April 8th, 2011

The short answer to the above question is no.  Though it should come as no surprise that a casino game isn’t beatable, it would be more satisfying to know the reasoning behind this, rather than simply stating it.  After all, slots are an immensely popular game, not to mention that we have all heard stories about someone hitting it big on a slot machine.  Frankly, these accounts are a godsend to the casino, as they serve to attract more players, who will then slowly bleed away their money on the slot machines.

Las vegas Slot MachinesNow for the longer answer: slots aren’t beatable in the long run because the machines are programmed to only pay back a percentage of the money played in them.  Penny slots usually have the worst return percentages while higher increment machines will have better returns.  Though they can be much lower, common paybacks are between 94% and 97%.  If you play a machine with a payback of 95%, you can expect to lose $5 for every $100 you play.  Of course, this assumes a relatively large sample size (we’re talking in the millions), so individual winning and losing will vary depending on how often the machine is hitting.  This depends on random number generator that slot machines use to determine which images will show up on the pay line, with the more valuable payout combinations being generated less frequently.  This generator is programmed for the long haul, though, so it is entirely possible that you could win two jackpots within a few spins while someone could feed the machine thousands of quarters and get next to nothing back.  All that matters to the casino is that the machine makes a profit over the course of millions upon millions of spins.

Making Key Decisions

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Perhaps one of the most difficult things to learn when you start out playing poker is what decision to make. You don’t have a lot of time to make up your mind and especially in the beginning, when you are trying to process all the information. Pressure can also make you do some real crazy, stupid things, that you look back on and think, why did I do that?

The best advice I can give is to get out there and play as much poker as you can, that way you will know what to do in given situations and your decision making will improve. Or, go and play at the slot machines… if you can’t take the pace…

It also helps to take in as much information as you can and process it quickly. Poker has taught me to make a decision quickly, even though I have very little information to work with. How often in life do you hear people say, “I didn’t do it because I didn’t know enough”? I reckon just do it… get out there and get on with it… don’t procrastinate because you are trying to find out everything before making a decision!

Sometimes we make the wrong decisions – so what?

The difference between online Poker and online Casino

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

For the online Poker providers and online Casino providers there is a huge difference between Players who play Poker online and Players who play in online casinos.

First of all the difference between a Poker Player and a Casino Player is the Gamble. Poker is not really a gamble game because it has a lot of math inside the game.

Players who play in Casinos online only do it for the thrill of the gamble. This is why the provider has to offer a completely different online casino bounus and online poker bonus. The structure of these bonuses are that far apart that we should take a look at them. The main difference is that if players win in a Casino en Ligne they win from the casino. If Poker players win they win from the other online poker players and the poker room will take the poker rake. The beste online casino is the Casino that gives the most back to his players. Most Casinos online have a give back percentage of 96%-97% but if you look good there are Casinos that give back a percentage of 98%. The most landbased casinos have a percentage of 80-90 s that is much less. In the online poker rooms you can ask for rake back. In Poker online Rakeback is very usefull for the player because he gets a part of his money back. So if you look for Casino on-line and Poker rooms online make sure you choose the right one.

Took advantage of a professional counter at the Blackjack table

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

I had a huge night yesterday in my local casino where we have a shoe-based single deck blackjack game and it wasn’t thanks to my card counting skills… I spotted someone consistently playing a solid game varying his bet sizes throughout the shoe and decided to low-bet one shoe and see if I could do my basic KISS-count to see if his bets made sense…

They did — and for the coming two hours I followed his pattern of minbets up to 15x minbet to end up winning $4900. When he left I played on for about ten minutes before cashing out with $4700 profit. Not too shabby.

On my way to the cashier I noticed my hero playing the roulette — so I walked over and whispered a “thank-you for your excellent count” in his ear… He smiled and said: “Ha, I noticed”.

Great stuff — hope to spot him at the casino again soon! :D

I’m in Vegas so cut me some slack

Saturday, April 5th, 2008

Alright guys sorry for not posting too much in the past few days but I’ve been in Vegas and I’m winning good so I decided to stay another week. Might be backin a couple days from the hotel lobby with some results but right now I’m just having fun playing… :)

Wish me luck — I’m off to the Baccarat (punto banco here!) table!

I FLOPPED A ROYAL FLUSH!!!!

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

ROYAL FLUSH DIAMONDSEvery single poker player waits for that magical moment… His or her first ever ROYAL FLUSH. It took me quite a few years to make one in real life (I’ve had one online, but that’s something different, right?) — but now I have!

I was playing the $5/$10 game at the local casino and was sitting on the button with AJ of diamonds. The flop was a well-deserved T-Q-K of diamonds. I was in for a treat as the other guy had KQ and was stupid enough to take my bet as a defensive one. He shoved in hoping I was on the diamond draw — too bad I flopped THE STONE COLD ULTIMATE NUTS BABY! :D

I’m still smiling. :)

Win at poker, lose at blackjack…

Friday, February 8th, 2008

I feel sick. Came home last night feeling sick. Played poker for about 3 hours, turned $750 into $3500 — donked off all my profit in half an hour at the blackjack table….

I’m usually quite the disciplined player, but for some reason I failed yesterday. Feels so stupid once you walk out of the casino. DAMN.

Super-live live games

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

I just got out of bed after a long night at the casino, and I’m still somewhat shaking after playing in the most action-packed poker game I’ve ever been a part of… Not only did I end up a winner, I also ended being at least in the top-3 of the tightest players throughout the evening. That’s a record for me – seeing as I’m usually one to play quite aggressively from close to any position at certain points in a cash game…

Yesterday, that wasn’t necessary. The poker game was so über-live that I decided to play lock down poker, only get involved with wired pairs and AQ+ — and it worked out. Pushed every TT+ from any position strongly with pre-flop raises of 5BB (getting multiple callers each time) – and pretty much moving in on any flop that hit. The best pot of the night saw me holding AQ of spades, the flop coming AJ4 with two spades – me checking, one guy moving all in, other guy calling – me thinking it over and moving in over the top. Second caller calls my hand and shows…. A pair of jacks. :D The first shover showed a lower flush draw – which was a sick play at the table….

Anyway, ended up close to tripling up in that hand, beating two hands that were in a pot they probably never should have entered.

Final result: buy-in * 7. Good night, but… not good for the heart. :D

How not to play the roulette

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

I’ve seen so many people trying to do the “I’ll just doubly my bet when I lose, and keep doubling until I win, and then start over again!”-tactic, winning 50x bets until losing it all trying to win 1x bet. It doesn’t work. It’s flawed. THE SYSTEM IS NOT A WINNER.

It’s all about betting systems, and dcwelshart.com has covered them for blackjack — pretty useful for the roulette too! Once you get the hang of how to play, you’ll realise how stupid it is risking $300 to win $2 on an original betting startpoint.

Got it? DONT JUST DOUBLE — IT NO WORK! hehehehe
